Library and Information Science

Library and Information Science

The Department was established in 1977 when the University itself became a fully-fledged university.  It started with a two-year Diploma Programme – Diploma in Library Science (DLS) up to 1980, when the BA/B.Sc. Library Science (LSC) programme was introduced.  Since then the programme has undergone several minor and major reviews in both contents and grading system.
One of the major reviews was undertaken in 1999 through 2001.  The entire BA/BSc. (LSC) was restructured and renamed from 2006/07 session. It was again restructured and a number of new courses were introduced and the programme was renamed BA/B.Sc. (LIS). All these changes are direct reflection of the dynamic nature of the fields of library and information science. Some new courses were introduced, some were renamed and credit loads readjusted in favour of Library and Information Science (LIS), with the third subsidiary academic subject dropped at the end of level 200.  The course coding was changed from LSC to LIS and most of the courses from level 100 to level 400 were assigned two credits, while more optional and elective courses were provided at all levels.

Message from HOD "We extend warm greetings and welcome you to the webpage of the Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Education, Bayero University, Kano.
It gives me immense pleasure to lead the Department of Library and Information Sciences, the most sought programme by the students. The department is excited to collaborate with you as you embark on an exciting educational voyage knowledge exploration.
Library and Information Science has the objective of training librarians for the country's libraries and information centres and beyond. These students will possess the necessary skills to perform intermediate-level tasks and multi-model roles in libraries, efficiently and effectively manage school or community libraries, and effectively apply Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in handling and processing information.

As the head of this department, I am motivated by my professional colleagues and our students in terms of commitments, collaborative efforts to create meaningful research and share knowledge which augments our staff and students become competent, engaged as a librarians in a number of progressive institutions or organisations like UN, ILO, UNESCO, ECOWAS, AFDB etc. Also they can practice as information consultants or brokers.
Best Wishes."
